You can walk into many bookstores in Canada these days and its all the same store with all the same stuff. Well for over 22 years Prairie Sky Books has been the alternative to the norm, and is now more than ever, a haven from the slick, the bland and the repetitive. Originally opened as a Dharma Bookstore in 1978, Prairie Sky Books quickly expanded to include books on World Religions, Wicca and Magic, Women's Studies, Astrology and Tarot, Aboriginal Studies, Self Help...you get the picture. They also have Buddhist and Hindu Statues, Tibetan Bowls and Bells, and other Religious artifacts. Add lots of Indian cotton clothing, jewellery, tapestries and tons of excellent incense and you have Prairie Sky Books. You can wander through the thousand square foot store for hours and not see everything. The selection is terrific and the service knowledgeable and entertaining. Special orders are really fast, usually 4-10 days. The owner is grumpy sometimes (he's been in retail for 22 years, so I'm sure you will understand) but the staff are fantastic. The atmosphere is sublime and uplifting, people drop in just to feel good. Prairie Sky Books is located in the Wolseley District of Winnipeg and is a community landmark. People come from all over the city and many are greeted by name. It most certainly is not another faceless, soulless big box.
